Predicting strength of Finnish birch veneers based on three different failure criteria

Abstract The use of wood in high-performance composites based on laminated veneer products, plywood or hybrid elements thereof requires accurate prediction strength each individual ply. Previous research has shown that one dominating factor influencing the birch veneers is fibre orientation. present study investigates validity failure criteria after Tsai-Hill, Hoffmann and Kollmann for thin under tensile loading. orientation in- out-of-plane was measured by means wide-angle X-ray scattering. Tensile threshold values were determined laboratory experiments. Pearson correlation between predicted actual ranged from 0.836 up to 0.883. Best ( r = 0.883) achieved using a combined angle It commonly used manmade reinforced are also applicable veneers.
